Interviewing requires advance planning, preparation, and practice. Practice and preparation will help you to build your confidence and allow your qualifications to shine. Interviewing is a conversation, you and the interviewer are getting to know one another. While each interview is different, employers invest significant time and money into recruiting candidates and want you to do well during the interview. Remember, you are also deciding if the organization and role will be a good fit.

Tips for Successful Interviews

Prepare

  • Know yourself and how to communicate your experiences and skills
  • Know about the employer
  • Anticipate and plan for questions you will be asked and will want to ask
  • Practice aloud
  • Dress the part

 

Communicate

  • Establish rapport and be open and engaged
  • Use active listening skills
  • Think about the interview as a conversation – a give and take and take time to respond if needed
  • Ask thoughtful and researched questions
  • Close the interview stating your interest in the position and your qualifications
  • Ask about next steps and follow up

 

Follow up

  • Write a thank you note within 24 hours
  • Complete any follow up mentioned by the employer
  • Reflect upon the interview, the experience, who you met, the position, the organization and the fit
