Human Environmental Sciences Department
The Department of Human Environmental Sciences uses an interdisciplinary approach to study the relationship among individuals, families and communities and the environments in which they function. As an applied science program, the department focuses on assisting people to improve their quality of life, thereby improving the conditions of society.

The Human Environmental Sciences department has a 100-year history at Meredith. The program began in 1914, and hundreds of alumnae have since gone on to successful lives of service to the field and their communities. Read more about our 100-year history.
Emily Wilkinson, ’19, has always had a passion for children and individuals with special needs. Her Meredith experience has grown that passion and her own personal experiences have inspired her to become a special education teacher.
When Helina Biru, ’18, arrived on the Meredith College campus in 2014 from Ethiopia, she couldn’t anticipate just how much she would achieve in four years.
