Rachel Anne Phelps

Interior design major Rachel Anne Phelps, ’16, discovered her passion for the field at a young age and says that Meredith paved the way for her dream to become reality.

A Sandra Graham Shelton Scholar, Kay Lambeth Interior Design Scholar, Welton Family Scholar, and IFDA Rising Star, Rachel Anne will start work in June as an interior designer with Level 5 Designs in Raleigh.

“Meredith has provided me with ample opportunity to build on my knowledge of design through work in the classroom, leadership positions, and hands-on experience with internships with both residential and commercial firms.”

Rachel Anne participated in undergraduate research, delivering a presentation at CSA Day 2014 on maintaining the historical significance of a home while bringing it up to modern standards. She gained real-world experience through study abroad trips to the United Kingdom and Italy, where she worked with a local architect on a high-end retail store.

Rachel Anne also served as co-president of Meredith’s chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers, secretary of Kappa Omicron Nu honor society, member of White Iris Circle, study abroad peer ambassador, and phone-a-thon caller.

“These experiences have made me stronger creatively and academically and have allowed me to stretch my wings by getting me out of my comfort zone.”

She says that her professors also have had a big impact on her success.

“You don’t feel like just a number here at Meredith. Our professors care deeply about our education and about our lives beyond the gates. The staff are just as wonderful. They have provided me with wonderful insight and advice on everything from study abroad to job opportunities. Meredith faculty and staff empower students to be strong women and push us to be the best that we can be.”

Rachel Anne’s peer relationships were an equally powerful a part of her Meredith experience.

“I will forever cherish the friendships I have made here that will last long after my college career has ended. We have pushed each other and encouraged each other. We have laughed, cried, and worked together for the last four years and have created a unique bond that is only found here at Meredith.”
