Guidebook / Getting Involved

Meredith College offers a wide variety of campus-wide, student-led organizations to get involved in. At the start of the fall semester, Meredith hosts an activities fair where students can learn more about the different organizations, events coming up, and how to get involved. You can also review this list of student organizations and MC Connect as you consider where you would like to plug in throughout your time at Meredith. Student Leadership and Service (SLS) is the office on campus that you can reach out to for information about or assistance with campus-wide events, organizations and traditions.

Additionally, there are two campus involvement opportunities that the Office of International Programs specifically helps to support: the Meredith International Association and the International Ambassadors.

Meredith International Association (MIA)

The Meredith International Association (MIA) is a student-led group that works to share knowledge and promote understanding of different cultures in the Meredith community. MIA looks to explore cultural, social, and political issues through interaction with other students, faculty, administration, and community groups.  MIA hosts events like Coffee Houses, UN Dinner, and a Global Fashion Show to promote mutual respect and representation of the diverse community present at Meredith College. MIA also works to facilitate friendships and connections among and beyond international students across the Meredith community. Follow MIA on Instagram @mia_mereco to get the latest information.

International Ambassadors

International Ambassadors are a vital component to the welcome and support Meredith College is able to provide to incoming international students. Please contact internationalprograms@meredith.edu for more information.

International Ambassadors are a select group of students who volunteer to serve a leadership role within the international student community at Meredith College.  International Ambassadors provide welcome and arrival assistance to incoming international students, are involved with the planning and facilitation of International Orientation, and provide ongoing support through peer mentorship and presence at international student events throughout the year.

Between now and the beginning of August, it is anticipated that leaders may spend approximately 10 hours on ambassador commitments.  These commitments include one group meeting before the semester is finished and some individual work over the summer on a specific project (planning ice breakers, social activities, or an orientation session) and emailing with an incoming international student.  Ambassadors are expected to arrive in Raleigh by Tuesday, August 13 as we will have a mandatory training/meeting that afternoon, before orientation events begin on Wednesday, August 14.  If you’re living on-campus, OIP will work with Residence Life to request an early move-in for you.  International Orientation runs through Friday, August 16.  While ambassadors will share responsibilities during orientation, please block your calendars for all of Wed – Fri until our schedule is set.  Unfortunately, this does mean that RAs and SAs are unable to serve as International Ambassadors due to schedule conflicts in August. During the school year, Ambassadors should expect a monthly group meeting, regular contact with a new student mentee, and attendance at at least one international student event each semester(organized by OIP or MIA).

Ambassadors will each be responsible for a specific component of orientation, such as ice breakers, social activities, or orientation sessions.  Each Ambassador (or pair of Ambassadors) is also responsible for keeping the whole Ambassador team informed of progress made and challenges met during the planning stages.

Ambassadors will be given the contact information for an incoming international student and are expected to reach out with an initial, introductory email over the summer, meet at orientation, and maintain contact with the mentee throughout their first year.

Ambassadors are expected to attend an initial meeting this semester, stay in touch with each other periodically over the summer, attend training on August 13, and save their schedule August 14 – 16.

Ambassadors are expected to take advantage of opportunities to interact with new students and be enthusiastic about welcoming and supporting the students in their transition to life in Meredith.

Interested students are invited to apply to serve as an International Ambassador here. Applications are due by Monday, April 29. Welcoming new international students to Meredith is an exciting opportunity, and we appreciate your willingness to volunteer your time to make the transition a memorable and positive one for new students!
