Wings – Adult Education Going Strong at Meredith

Wings is indeed going strong, with 127 students enrolled for spring semester and a great pool of well-qualified applicants being admitted for fall. This is an impressive number of currently-enrolled Wings students, considering the fact that 69 Wings students graduated last year. We anticipate another 55 graduates this year. Our Wings population ranges in age from 23 to 77 and the majority of students are completing their degrees within two and a half years; some Wings transfer students complete their degrees within two years, and in some cases as little as one year. We also have students who are taking one or two courses per semester and staying the course with strength and tenacity.

Our Wings students are strong in number and they are academically strong. I recently invited 14 Wings students to accept the honor of induction into Alpha Sigma Lambda, the national honor society for non-traditional students. Alpha Sigma Lambda membership is offered to recognize students each year who are in the top 20 percent of students age 23 and older at the beginning of fall semester, pursuing their first bachelor’s degree and who have completed at least 24 credit hours at Meredith College, including at least 18 credit hours of liberal arts courses with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 and above on course work completed at Meredith. This year’s inductees excel academically with GPAs of 3.69-4.0. They will join the 197 Meredith women inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda since our Pi Theta chapter’s charter in 2007.

Our Wings students are diverse. They come from diverse backgrounds and career paths and are pursuing majors in 27 areas. They are single women, single moms, married moms, retired and active military personnel, empty nesters, and post-retirees.  Wings students are career starters, career changers, career enhancers, entrepreneurs, and even retirees. I am fortunate to work with such great women who bring so much to Meredith!
