USA South Women’s Presidents’ Cup Presented; Championship Banners Raised

Thanks in part to three conference championships last fall, Meredith College earned the 2015 USA South Women’s Presidents’ Cup. Commissioner Rita Wiggs presented the award to Vice President of College Programs Jean Jackson, Athletic Director Jackie Myers, and a host of student-athletes and staff last week just prior to the home soccer match. Read more about the award. The cup will remain on campus throughout the year and will travel around campus to various locations.

As part of last week’s celebration of success, Meredith unveiled four new championship banners hanging in Weatherspoon Gymnasium. The banners recognize the 2014 USA South Women’s Soccer Regular Season Co-Championship, the 2014 USA South Volleyball North Division title, the 2014 USA South Women’s Cross Country Championship, and the 2015 USA South Women’s Lacrosse Tournament title.

As we pay tribute to the 2014-2015 Avenging Angels, the current Meredith cross country, soccer, and volleyball teams are well-placed for another successful finish as we near the final weeks of the season.

Two cross country runners, Itzel Gonzalez and Mattie Sue Strickland, set personal records Saturday during the 6,000 meter invitational at Shenandoah University, and Macy Brinson collected her fourth conference Rookie of the Week honor for her finish. The Angels will attempt a three-peat at the USA South Championships October 31 at Hagan Stone Park in Pleasant Garden, N.C. with the NCAA South/Southeast Regionals set to take place two weeks later back in Winchester, Virginia.

Soccer remains undefeated in USA South action with just three matches left in the regular season. Goalie Jaisa Loch was named this week’s conference Defensive Player of the Week as the Angels shut out Methodist and Averett.

Finally, the volleyball Avenging Angels sit atop the USA South Conference North division rankings alongside rival Averett University. MCVB must face some of its toughest competition of the season during the final weeks of the regular season, including the top three South division programs of Covenant, Maryville, and Piedmont. Tournament seeding for both soccer and volleyball will be announced November 1.
