Triangle Alumnae Welcome New Wings Director

Local alumnae of Meredith’s adult education program gathered, along with current adult students and administrators, for a reception in the Mae Grimmer House on Tuesday, March 24. The event was to welcome Tom Manning, who joined Meredith last month as director of the Wings program.

Manning’s appointment as director represents a significant milestone in the College’s efforts to revitalize its adult education program.

Senior Vice President and Provost Matthew Poslusny noted the symbolism of the event in his welcome remarks.

“It was nearly a year ago, on April 12, 2014, that many of you gathered for the 23+ reunion … that celebrated Meredith’s commitment to educating women of all ages,” Poslusny said. “At that reunion, President Allen and I promised a revitalization of the program that, at one point, was enrolling over 200 new students each fall and made up over 20% of our student body. Since [the reunion], we have worked hard to start to make good on that promise.”

Poslusny said the College was looking for a director who could “provide the type of strong leadership that the program had known when it was led by such people as Anne Dahle and Sandra Close.”

“An adult student himself, Tom Manning brings a unique set of qualifications and experiences with him,” he said. “As you get to know Tom, I am sure that you will agree that he is the right person to continue the legacy that Anne and Sandra started.”

Manning’s professional experience includes 15 years in advising and career services roles he’s held within the North Carolina Community College system. He holds a B.S. in psychology from High Point University and an M.S. in counseling and education development from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

As director of Wings, Manning has begun building on the work started last fall by President Allen, the Wings Advisory committee, admissions, financial assistance, academic and career planning, marketing, institutional advancement, and many others on campus to reinvigorate adult education at Meredith. These efforts resulted in higher enrollment of new Wings students for the Spring 2015 semester and more than $2 million in gifts to support Wings student scholarships and programming.
