During a week filled with 125th anniversary celebration events, the opportunity to enjoy a spot of tea and a bite of dessert at the Mad Hatter's Tea was the icing on the cake.
On Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, each participant of the Mad Hatter's Tea in Belk Dining Hall became Alice, wandering in a lively, colorful space made more meaningful by the people who attended.
There was a giant, multi-tiered cake in the middle of the dining hall illustrating the story of Alice in Wonderland in vibrant color from top to bottom, cast members from the College’s recent production playing their roles in full costume, and an abundant spread of tea, finger sandwiches, cookies, and other treats.
It was a wonder where one should begin making his or her rounds at the tea party – especially considering the number of students, faculty, alumnae, and other special guests available for mingling at every turn. The beauty was that no matter where one looked around the room, conversations were started, pictures taken, and lasting memories created.
Meredith students and faculty are known for making strong connections that last a lifetime. The Mad Hatter's Tea revealed this closely knit community in a beautiful way. Students were quick to welcome wanderers to their tables for conversation. Alumnae enjoyed reconnecting. And faculty cast members reveled in the most rewarding parts of their Alice experiences.
The Mad Hatter's Tea was full of laughter, celebration, and connection – a vivid reminder of what it means to be Going Strong at Meredith College. Other 125th celebration events included a Mini-Crook Hunt and a Throwback Thursday party featuring a lip sync competition between classes and a flashmob performance by faculty and staff.
