Meredith College held its 2023 Honoring Women Veterans event on Wednesday, Nov. 8, in Jones Chapel.
The annual event honors all veterans, with special emphasis on the contributions of women veterans. It is presented by the Meredith College Honoring Women Veterans Committee.
President Jo Allen served as the featured speaker. Patty Blackwell, U.S. Air Force veteran and co-chair of the planning committee, recognized Allen for starting the annual event in 2011.
Allen said Meredith College “honors all veterans, but calls special attention to women whose contributions in wartime and in times of peace” have historically been overlooked.
The guest speakers over the years have “represented the numerous ways we can memorialize the service of women veterans,” Allen said. Her remarks also emphasized the importance of diplomacy and understanding in times of conflict.
The event also featured music by Meredith Professor of Music Jean Wozencraft-Ornellas and ended with a medley of service hymns and anthems for each branch of the U.S. military.
In addition to the service, Meredith also held a holiday card workshop to create greetings for veterans, and Flags of Honor were displayed along the Main Campus Drive.
