Fall Sports Poised to Finish Strong in USA South

With just two and a half weeks remaining in the regular season, the Meredith Avenging Angels athletic teams are in a strong position.

The soccer team hosted this year’s Kick Cancer event Sunday, October 13, beginning with an afternoon match versus William Peace. Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president Megan Amanatides and her soccer teammates presented Pam Kohl, the executive director of the North Carolina Triangle to Coast chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, with a check for $680 during the pregame activities.

Following the game, the athletics department partnered with the soccer team and area alumnae to host the 5K Run for Riggs. Students, staff, friends, family and fans pitched in $10 each to participate in the event and raised the final total to nearly $2,500 for Komen’s fight against cancer in honor of Assistant Coach Ashley Riggs.

The Avenging Angel volleyball squad defeated Averett University in a 3-2 thriller during the October 16 Dig Pink event. Meredith edged past the Cougars to claim first place in USA South North division standings with the win. League teams will jostle during the coming days for one of eight spots reserved for tournament seeds. The top five in the North and the top three in the South division will meet November 8 in Martinsville, Virginia, for the USA South championship event.

With regular appearances in the USA South weekly honors, sophomore runner Allie Gallagher and rookie teammate Ann Chapin Meekins will push the Meredith cross country team in the season’s final events of the year. The harriers close out the regular season with a 6,000 meter event at Christopher Newport in order to prepare for the league championship meet in November.

As the fall sports teams set their sights on the post-season, MC lacrosse wraps up a brief non-traditional segment with a Meredith Jamboree Saturday, October 26. Seven teams will visit Meredith to compete in an all-day affair of 25 minute competitions to ready for the spring season. Fans can visit the Meredith Athletic track & Field contest between 12:30 and 9 p.m. Saturday to catch a glimpse of the college’s newest sport.
