Faculty/Staff Accomplishments and News Briefs – June 2023

In this issue, we share the accomplishments of faculty and staff in Art, Career Planning, Education, Events, Health Services, International Programs, and Political Science. We also share a link to PIE resources and information about the Cooperating Raleigh Colleges (CRC) summer conference for staff.

Campus Engagement Assistant Bob Autry,  in Meredith Events, is participating in Carla Hall’s 2023 Favorite Chef competition. Supporters can vote for him once daily during the competition. More information is available at https://favchef.com/2023/bob-autry.

Director of Health Services Mary Johnson attended the American College Health Association  (ACHA) annual conference in Boston from May 30-June 3. She also presented several topics during the conference and was named to the board of the Southern College Health Association (SCHA), a regional ACHA affiliate.

Visiting Assistant Professor / Gallery Director Todd Jones recently completed an artist residency at Wildacres in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Wildacres hosts approximately 70 artists yearly for one-week residencies from April through October. The residency program allows artists the solitude and inspiration needed to begin or continue work on a project in their field of creative arts. Jones used the time to work on his upcoming solo exhibition at Elon University in August.

Associate Director of Employer Relations Jane Matthews, Office of Career Planning, co-moderated a breakout session during the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Employers (NCACE) annual conference, held May 1-3, 2023, in Raleigh. The session was developed in partnership with Lori Brasile, Assistant Director, University Career Center, UNC-Charlotte, and was titled, “New & Innovative Approaches to Supporting International Students: A Panel Discussion.” Assistant Director of International Programs Jennifer Glass served as a panelist during the session, sharing best practices, strategies, and programming ideas for working with International students.

Professor of Political Science David McLennan and alumna Daphne Moore, ’19, co-directed this year’s Voices of Change Political Institute for college women of color, hosted at Meredith May 31-June 3. Participants came from Johnson C. Smith, UNC-Charlotte, North Carolina A&T, Fayetteville State, Queens University of Charlotte, UNC-Pembroke, Bennett College, and Beaufort County Community College. Three Meredith undergraduate students, Chorro Jobe, Atlantis Showalter, and Nia Simpson, attended. The Institute concluded with a panel of women public service leaders from across the state and a ceremony recognizing the participants. This is the third year Meredith has hosted the Voices of Change Institute, with funding from the Legacies of Slavery grant, through the Council of Independent Colleges, the Gilder Lehrman Institute at Yale University, the Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Education faculty members Jennifer Olson and Cindy Morton-Rose presented at the 2023 NCICU Science of Reading Summer Faculty Institute on June 6 at High Point University. The title of the presentation was Threading the Needle: Challenges and Triumphs of Integrating Structured Literacy in Two K-6, Culturally Relevant, Literacy Methods Courses.  The presentation and the institute were connected to the North Carolina “Excellent Public Schools Act” legislation and a generous grant from the Goodnight Foundation.
