Faculty/Staff Accomplishments and News Briefs January 2023

In this issue, we celebrate the accomplishments of faculty and staff in economics, English, hospitality and tourism management, and political science. We also share news briefs about a CRC workshop for staff and an item from the nutrition program requesting submissions for the second edition of Meredith’s community cookbook.

Director and Instructor of the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program Michael Altman is serving a two-year term on the Board of the Greater Raleigh Visitor and Convention Bureau’s Board of Directors. Altman was recently featured on the Bureau’s Visit Raleigh Tourism Talk blog as one of the “people in our area whom every hospitality partner ought to know.”

In December 2022, Associate Professor of Political Science Whitney Ross Manzo along with Michael Bitzer (Catawba College), Chris Cooper (Western Carolina University), and Susan Roberts (Davidson College), published an article in Social Science Quarterly on the growth of Unaffiliated voters in North Carolina. The article, “Growing and Distinct: The Unaffiliated Voter as Unmoored Voter,” uses Meredith Poll data to demonstrate that Unaffiliated voters are not shadow partisans but in fact a different group of voters.

Professor of English Kelly Morris Roberts presented “Intersections of Anti-Racist Literature, YAL, and Empathy Building” at the N.C. English Teachers Association annual conference on October 29, 2022. The presentation featured conversations about Dr. Roberts’ recent literature review and critique of new Young Adult titles with a DEI trainer in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area schools.

Professor of Economics Anne York was interviewed by WRAL about the opening of the Apple campus in Wake County. The story with Dr. York was featured on the station’s 6:00 news on January 6.  York was also recently interviewed by WRALTechwire. This interview was featured on their website on December 22, 2022, with the title “If more people don’t return to work Fed is fighting a losing battle against inflation: Meredith economist”.
