Faculty/Staff Accomplishments and News Briefs 4/26/23

In this issue, we celebrate the accomplishments of faculty and staff in chemistry, economics, history, and sociology. We also share news briefs about an employee headshot session and the Campus Store’s spring sale.

Professor of Sociology Lori Brown was interviewed by the Associated Press for an article about the changing status of the front door in the United States from a symbol of welcome to a warning sign. The story, “The front door, threshold of welcome — and perilous border,”  was published on April 23, 2023. 

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. Andrea Carter is first author on a recently published article in the scientific journal Structure titled “Structural features of the Notch ankyrin domain-Deltex WWE2 domain heterodimer determined by NMR spectroscopy and functional implications.” The proteins Notch and Deltex interact as part of a signaling pathway that is important in animal development. Carter’s work identified the surface involved in binding on the Deltex protein, and her co-authors confirmed that disrupting this binding surface impacts signaling both in vitro and within living cells. Professor of History Dan Fountain participated as a pilot project presenter at the Monumental Opportunities Teach-In at the Atlanta History Center in Georgia, April 6-7. The professional workshop and teach-in was hosted by Sewanee (The University of the South) and featured the collaborative work on the Locating Slavery’s Legacies Database. The event included a keynote discussion featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Natasha Tretheway and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David Blight.  Learn more about the regional event 

Professor of Economics Anne York was interviewed by WRAL Techwire for an article about economic trends. The article, “A ‘turning point’ on jobs: Soft landing for economy or recession?,” was published on April 6, 2023.

News Briefs

Faculty/Staff Headshots Session May 3
This is an opportunity for faculty and staff to have professional headshots taken by the Department of Marketing for usage on meredith.edu.  All headshot sessions will be conducted behind Johnson Hall in the Courtyard in front of Brewer Residence Hall (Rain location will be on the second floor of the SMB Atrium).  The headshot session will take place Wednesday, May 3 from 10 – 11 a.m.  To help with scheduling, please register in advance so we know to expect you. Walk-ins will also be welcome!  You may come by anytime during the hour session.
