Meredith’s three fall sports teams set the tone for the year with a trio of USA South Conference Championships. Under direction of Amy Olsen, who earned her second consecutive Coach of the Year honor in November, the cross country team defended their 2013 USA South title for back-to-back conference championships.
Rookie Runner of the Year Mary Kate Morgan and new all-time Meredith 5000 meter record holder Allie Gallagher led the charge as the Avenging Angels edged out their league opponents by just three points to collect the trophy.
With a 16-3 conference record, the Meredith volleyball team earned the 2014 USA South North Division title. With Head Coach Fiona Barkley in her sixth year at the helm, the team’s 25 overall wins match the school’s best in program history. Sophomore Karlie Long collected a host of honors throughout the season, including honorable mention recognition on the American Volleyball Association’s All-America list.
The third new banner to soon hang in the Weatherspoon Gymnasium will feature the soccer team’s USA South Regular Season Co-Championship title. Head Coach Paul Smith collected his second Coach of the Year honor, and Jaisa Loch was just the third goalie to garner the league’s Rookie of the Year since the award’s inception in 1995. The Avenging Angels posted nine consecutive wins en route to a conference record of 10-1-1 and 13-5-2 overall.
With the soccer team’s success, three athletes collected All-State honors, and Danielle Lee earned the program’s only All-South Atlantic Region selection this fall.
The Meredith athletics department will partner with the College’s Department of Alumnae Relations to host an Avenging Angels student-athlete reunion this spring. The much anticipated event scheduled for Saturday, March 7, will bring alumnae athletes of all sports together for a fun-filled day on campus.
All three spring teams will be in action that day, and we look forward to cheering on current athletes while celebrating the contributions of alumnae. Please save this date and plan to attend.
