Avenging Angels Close Out Another Successful Year

Meredith College athletics wrapped up another successful year that included four USA South Championships, a third-consecutive NCAA Tournament bid, two Coach of the Year honors, and an abundance of student-athlete awards.

Longtime Head Soccer Coach Paul Smith led his team to a conference regular season title and the opportunity to host the semifinal and championship tournament matches. Four-year defensive standout Megan Luke earned All-State and All-Region honors, and Smith collected his third league coaching recognition.

The cross country Avenging Angels captured the program’s third consecutive conference championship under the direction of new Head Coach Leslie Payne. Payne also coached Meredith’s newest varsity sport of track & field to a highly successful inaugural season. The track team won a duals pairing versus Oglethorpe and the University of the South in the opening meet at Berry College. In the same competition Jessica Wallace won the 800m race in a field of 25 runners. The Angels continued to improve as four athletes set new Meredith records in the final meet of the season at Elon.

Meredith lacrosse capped off the spring season with the program’s first-ever USA South Regular Season crown and went on to win the tournament championship in Rocky Mount for the third consecutive year. Led by All-Region honorees Carlee Joseph and Katie Burnet, the Avenging Angels advanced to their third NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament and lost a competitive round-one match 12-11 to Pennsylvania’s Cabrini College.
