Avenging Angels Athletics Preparing for the Fall

With summer camps complete and new staff members hired, the Meredith athletics department looks to begin the fall season this week. Bringing with her more than 20 years of coaching experience, new Head Coach Leslie Payne will direct the Cross Country and Track and Field programs this year. Most recently, Payne directed the Ravenscroft School cross country program, as well as the distance runners in track and field. Assistant Track Coach Virgil Givens joined the team last spring to focus on recruiting, and the two welcome nearly 20 new student-athletes to the combined programs this fall.

Tammy Holleman returned to Meredith this summer as the new head athletic trainer and will be joined by Rebecca Edwards to care for the more than 150 Avenging Angels. Holleman worked in the Meredith training room part-time back in 2010 alongside Sharon Malley, followed by a four-year tenure with Barton College. Edwards and Holleman began their careers similarly at Western Carolina, and Edwards gained much of her experience in a clinical setting.

Newcomer Ryan Phelps was recently hired as the new assistant tennis coach. He will join third-year Head Coach Meredith Vincent this fall. Phelps currently teaches physical education at Apex High School, serving as co-chair of the department. He coached high school tennis teams for 14 years before moving to MacGregor Downs Country Club as an instructor in 2012.

Assistant Athletic Director Wendy Jones will assume the role of senior woman administrator (SWA) this fall as well. Malley served in this capacity while head trainer for the Angels, but she recently transitioned into a full-time faculty role with the Department of Nutrition, Health, and Human Performance. A position established by the NCAA to enhance the gender diversity of athletic administrations, the SWA supports the program alongside the AD.
