Annual Wetonah Rice Parker Teaching Symposium to Be Held November 5

Meredith College will hold the Wetonah Rice Parker Teaching Symposium on November 5, 2022.

The teaching symposium promotes inclusive and equitable educational practices for all learners. The symposium addresses the unique needs of beginning teachers and facilitates the continued leadership development of master teachers. Participation is open to everyone interested in social justice in education.

This year’s schedule features a keynote, “Bearing Witness: Affirming our Collective Experiences, Wisdom, and Humanity for Social Emotional Healing, Justice & Empowerment in Post-2020 Education,” presented by Barbie Garayúa Tudryn. She is a school counselor at a dual-language elementary school in North Carolina and a member of the Teaching Tolerance Advisory Board. Breakout sessions and roundtable discussions will focus on related topics.

The annual event is held in honor of Wetonah “Toni” Rice Parker, who was a member of Meredith’s Department of Education for 25 years and a classroom teacher in public schools for 14 years. The symposium ends with a call to action presented by Parker.
