2024 Meredith College Documentary Film Festival to be Held January 28

The Meredith College Documentary Film Festival will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2024, in Kresge Auditorium. (Snow date: February 4). This event is free and open to the public.

This year’s festival features a series of short documentaries and a concluding panel discussion with filmmakers.

The screening schedule is as follows: 

2 p.m.  Short Documentaries

Little Red Pocketbook (14 minutes)
Director: Holly Holder
This film chronicles the actions of the students of Adkin High School in Kinston, North Carolina, who staged one of the first walkouts of the Civil Rights movement and helped to shape the course of history in Kinston.

Picturing Pigs (4 minutes)
Director: Camden Watts
Picturing Pigs is a documentary short film featuring two photographers, Jane M. Casteline and Shannon Johnstone, who developed an art advocacy project to make pigs more visible.

Chinese Girl Wants to Vote (5 minutes)
Director: Jinna Kim
This short historical documentary focuses on Chinese suffragist Dr. Mable Ping-Hua Lee, whose legacy and contributions are not widely known.

Insomnia (6 minutes)
Director: Kim Best
This short film illustrates the lengths a devoted pet owner will go to in order to help a restless kitty go to sleep.

Rescues (30 minutes)
Director: Ed Foster
In a world of victims, who rescues the rescuers? This film examines the financial and emotional toll taken on animal rescue workers.

3 p.m. Short Documentaries 

Better Bites with Bugs (13 minutes)
Director: Kim Best
This short documentary focuses on entomophagy, or the practice of eating insects.

The King In Yellow (4 minutes)
Director: Cole Frederick
This animated short tells the story of a land beyond time and space in which the inhabitants await a mysterious figure.

The River Speaks of Thirst (54 minutes)
Director: Vincent Johnson
This collection of audio poems, written by North Carolina poet laureate Jaki Shelton Green, and explored through movement and dance, documents the past and present experiences of African American people.

4:15 p.m. Concluding Panel Discussion
Moderator: Camden Watts

Panelists will be Kim Best, Ed Foster, Holly Holder, Kristi Johnson, Jinna Kim, and Jaki Shelton Green.

The Meredith College Documentary Film Festival is presented by the Meredith College Department of English with cooperation from Carlyle Campbell Library. For Meredith students, the film festival qualifies as an Academic and Cultural Event in General Education.
