Sam Ewell has previously served as chair and vice chair of the Board, as well as chair of several standing committees. He served as a member of the Presidential Search Committee in 1998-99 and as an ex-officio member of the Presidential Search Committee in 2010-11.

Ewell received his A.B. in Political Science from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1968. While at UNC, he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and served as a Legislative Intern with the N.C. General Assembly (1967). He received his J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1971, where he was a Babcock Scholar and President of the Student Bar Association.

Ewell practiced law in Wake County from 1971-76 and then returned to his hometown of Enfield to pursue a business opportunity. He was the owner and president of Ewell Ford Sales, Inc. from 1976 until 2000. He served on the Board of Directors of the N.C. Automobile Dealers Association for seven years. In Enfield, he served on the Board of Directors of Enfield Savings Bank for 12 years and then on the Board of Directors of Southern Bank for three years. Since his retirement in 2000, he has continued to remain active through community involvement and service. He served on the Board of Directors of the N.C. Housing Finance Agency for 10 years, serving as chairman from 2010-13. He also served on the Board of Directors of the National Council of State Housing Boards from 2010-13.
