What It’s Like to be a Transfer Student at Meredith College

“I went to a university right after high school, and it wasn’t a great fit for me. I took some time off to figure out where I wanted to go and then came across Meredith. When I went through the front gate, I looked at my mom, and I was like, ‘this is home. This is where I feel safe. It’s where I feel comfortable, and I want to finish my education here.’

What made me successful in being a transfer student was definitely my transfer advisor and the faculty that I worked with. My transfer advisor took me under her wing and helped me feel comfortable and understand every aspect of Meredith. 

In regards to my professors and the faculty that I worked with, they made me feel like I was family, like I was going to be successful, and built me up the entire time I was here.

The advice I would give to any student thinking about transferring here is to definitely take the tour and sign up and come to campus. I think the environment here is incredible, and once you come on campus, it’s like everything is lifted off your shoulders. Talking to the faculty, sitting in on classes, and being able to experience it for even just an hour is more than enough to convince anyone to come here and continue their education. The faculty here takes a lot of time to focus on us as students, and that is important.”

“My journey began right after high school. Like most people, I went straight to college. I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. I just, you know, went because Mom and Dad said, ‘Yeah, that’s what you’re supposed to do next,’ but I had no real aim as to what I should do. After about a year there of just taking electives and not getting inspired, I decided to join the Marine Corps just to let somebody else drive the bus and see where it leads me, you know? And I experienced a lot. I traveled. I’ve met many people, and then through those people, helping people, I decided, you know, human resources. I’m good at that. I know what I’m doing. I feel passionate about it. 

I chose Meredith because I was looking for a more small, intimate setting. The fact that it offered human resources was a plus, but I wanted to be a part of something. I wanted to feel like I mattered. I wanted my professors to know me. I wanted to make friends, and I just didn’t want to be in a huge sea of 100-plus students.

Don’t come just to get your education; get involved. I know you probably spent a lot of time taking a lot of classes but sign up for things. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. Because I definitely feel like I benefited from being a part of the clubs. Just signing up and testing my leadership. You don’t know if you don’t try.”

Alison Bunce, ’22, Communication Major

“I chose to come to Meredith because I transferred in from a large institution that was not the right fit for me. So when I came back home, it was between Meredith and another large institution in the area. I decided that the school with small classes and professors that know your name and know who you are and what you’re interested in just ended up being the right fit for me. 

I transferred halfway through my freshman year. It was very stressful. I wasn’t sure where I was going to start in that semester after leaving a different school. I got placed with a random roommate at the start of the semester and we ended up being, hopefully, lifelong friends. 

Everyone is really friendly and nice. I was never afraid to ask anyone for help or for directions. Everyone in Johnson Hall and all my professors were easy to talk to and ask for help. It was difficult, but I definitely made the right decision coming here.”
