Meredith Student Receives Award from National Association of Social Workers NC Chapter

The National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter (NASW-NC) has named Meredith College senior Dielle McMillan the recipient of the 2017 NASW-NC Toby Brown Award for Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) graduate student for the 2016-2017 academic year.

The award recognizes a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) student in North Carolina who best reflects and represents the ethics, values, and passion in the field of social work through exemplary performance in social work coursework, field placement, student social work associations, and community organizations.

McMillan has demonstrated her dedication to the profession and promise as a social worker through her work on campus and in her field placement at NAMI North Carolina. She established the first NAMI campus organization at Meredith College. The organization encourages students to advocate for mental health support on campus and spread awareness to end the stigma around mental illness. She also created a Diversity Awareness Week and a Self-love Campaign on campus. She is the Events Chair for Meredith’s social work club, a position that she created based off of a need she identified.

McMillan has received the Impact Raleigh Service Scholarship, the Youth Empowerment Award from National Alliance on Mental Illness North Carolina (NAMI North Carolina), and the Who’s Who National Campus Leaders Award.

Jack Register, the Executive Director of NAMI North Carolina, who was Dielle McMillan’s internship supervisor, said her “maturity, insight, identification with the profession, integration of the NASW Code of Ethics, and sense of professionalism” is exceptional.

After graduating from Meredith, McMillan will be attending the Master of Social Work program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May. She plans to continue her social work career pursuing a focus in macro social work. She is interested in program development, public policy and community integrated problem solving.
