Cross Country Wins USA South Championship

Meredith College Avenging Angels cross country team

The Meredith cross country team won the USA South Women’s Cross Country Championship meet Saturday, November 2, at Hagan Stone Park. Led by Runner of the Year Allie Gallagher and Rookie of the Year Ann Chapin Meekins, the Avenging Angels scored just 22 points to earn the program’s first conference title.

Head Coach Amy Olsen garnered Coach of the Year honors to complete the sweep of individual conference awards. Senior Lourdes Camacho earned Meredith’s All-Sportsmanship selection and posted a top-25 finish Saturday.
Gallagher crossed the finish line second among the pool of 77 women in a time of 25:13.81 for a career best. Meekins followed her a second later in third. Freshman Itzel Gonzalez set a 6K personal best with a time of 25:17.65 for a fourth-place finish.

Caitlin Dorantich and Illa Jones rounded out the top-seven performers, all who earned USA South All-Conference first team honors. Senior Lara Pantlin earned second team honors and sophomore Jessica Browning finished the race in 20th to garner placement on the All-Conference third team. The final four Avenging Angels, Katie Burnet, Megan Keesee, Katie Riggs, and Molie Schrull, recorded a top-50 pace for Meredith.

The top seven Avenging Angels will compete in the NCAA South/Southeast Regionals Saturday, November 16, at Christopher Newport University. The team earned a fifth-place finish in the 6000 meter CNU Invitational earlier this season on the same course.

The Meredith soccer team closed out the regular season last week in a tie for fourth place in USA South regular season rankings and earned the fifth seed in the tournament bracket. The Avenging Angels traveled to Methodist University Saturday and advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 overtime win versus the Monarchs.

Both the men’s and women’s soccer semifinal and championship matches will be held at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, Virginia, for the fifth consecutive year. Meredith will face top-seeded Maryville in Friday’s first semifinal pairing beginning at Noon. The winner will advance to the title match slated for a 2 p.m. kickoff Saturday afternoon.

The USA South’s volleyball regular season concluded Sunday with tournament pairings now in place. The Avenging Angels finished second in the league’s North division and will face new league member Covenant College in the 3 p.m. quarterfinal match. The winner advances to the semifinal round to face top-seeded Maryville, who remained undefeated in conference play this fall.
