All deposited students will receive a letter that will include login information for your Meredith email address, WebAdvisor, MyMeredith, and Brightspace. Once you log into Brightspace, you will see that you have access to the English, Spanish, and French placement exams.  If you took more than one year of Spanish or French in high school, you will test in that language.**  Even if you intend to study a different language at Meredith, you will still be required to test!  This benefits you, as the placement test will allow you to have options regarding how to fulfill your foreign language requirement.  If you took a language other than Spanish or French or have college level language credit, you will not test.

You will have until Orientation to complete these assessments.  However, you will want to complete the assessments well in advance of your meeting with a faculty advisor so that you can receive an optimal schedule.  If you anticipate having technological problems or questions, please take the assessment(s) during regular business hours (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) Monday – Friday.  You may reach our Technology Services Help Desk by calling (919) 760-2323.  Please note that questions about the content of the exam will not be answered. Results take a few weeks and your score will get sent to you faculty advisor.

**Students that have already received college credit for any level of Spanish (SPA-101, SPA-102, SPA-205) or French (FRE-101, FRE-102, FRE-205) will not need to test.  You will register for the next course in the sequence.

English

Meredith College maintains rigorous writing requirements. A transfer student may be required to complete an English assessment to determine the need for developmental English coursework if no prior composition courses have been taken, or to determine placement if transfer courses are over five years old. Students that have already received college credit for ENG-111, Principles of Writing, will not need to test.  You will register for ENG-200, Critical Reading and Writing. Our English placement is individualized. Incoming students who need to take the online English assessment will be contacted by the English Department. This online assessment consists of a written essay to assess grammatical knowledge, writing ability and readiness for freshman composition (ENG-111 Principles of Writing). English course placement is based on an evaluation of the English assessment results and SAT/ACT scores.

Foreign Language

Because Meredith has a foreign language general education requirement, transfers may be required to complete a Foreign Language placement test if they have:

• Taken two or more years of language in high school (within the past five years)
• College language credit over five years old

Students with recent transfer credit may enroll in the next course and those without should start with an introductory course. Current transfers who missed placement tests during orientation can learn when additional placement testing will be offered by contacting Professor Fanella Tague (Placement Coordinator) or Dr. Jonathan Wade (Department Chair) of World Languages and Cultures.

Mathematics

Students are required to take a course to build knowledge and skills in data analysis, abstract reasoning and problem solving; thus, all students must take either statistics or calculus for the General Education Mathematics requirement.

MAT 130, Exploring with Mathematics

MAT 130 is an option for any student who is not planning to take calculus. The three credit hour course fulfills the General Education Natural Science, Mathematics, or Computer Science elective requirement, but it does not fulfill the General Education Mathematics requirement . The course is strongly recommended prior to MAT 175 for any student with a D in her last high school mathematics class.

MAT 175, Statistics

This course fulfills the General Education Mathematics requirement. There is no prerequisite for MAT-175.

Calculus

A student may fulfill the General Education Mathematics requirement by taking:

• MAT 181 Integrated Precalculus/Calculus B
  or
• MAT 191 Calculus I

There are prerequisites for MAT 181 and MAT 191. Please use the following chart to determine if you have the background to begin in Calculus or if you need a prerequisite course prior to taking Calculus.

MAT 170 or MAT 180 fulfills the General Education Natural Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science elective requirement, but it does not fulfill the Mathematics requirement in General Education.

Additional Placement Tests

Appointments for placement testing or portfolio reviews in other subjects should be made through the dean of that particular school.
