What We Offer Grows Exhibition Opens October 10

The Frankie G. Weems Gallery presents Brooklyn-based artist Menika Lue in her exhibition “What We Offer Grows” October 10 – November 3, 2024.

Menika incorporates metal, canvas, oil paints, and glitter to create paintings and sculptures that portray her body. As a bi-racial woman, her work brings awareness of how she navigates the spaces she inhabits. Her process allows her to explore and understand her thoughts and ponderings about the society in which she lives. Her work questions how cultural, societal, familial, and personal beliefs influence one’s perception of self.

Menika understands her body through historical and current media and cultural traditions. She recreates her body as a metaphor for inner turmoil as she wrestles the fabric, willing it to form into what she wants it to become. These created figures live in expansive videos, giving them room to create their own worlds and aspirations for the future.

“What We Offer Grows” will be displayed from October 10 – November 3, 2024, in the Frankie G. Weems Gallery at the Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center on the Meredith College campus. The gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and weekends from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. The opening reception will be held on October 10 from 5 – 7 p.m. in the Weems Gallery. The gallery talk will take place in Room 137 at the Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. The gallery is located at 3800 Hillsborough St, Raleigh, NC 27607.
