USA South Champions!

The Meredith College athletics program is Going Strong this fall as we enter the final weeks of the season. Led by Itzel Gonzalez, the Avenging Angels cross country team captured the program’s third consecutive USA South Conference Championship at Hagan Stone Park last weekend. First-year Head Coach Leslie Payne continued Meredith’s new tradition to defeat rival Covenant by 12 points for the title.

With a nearly perfect record, including 11 consecutive league victories and only two goals allowed, the Angels soccer team claimed the USA South Regular Season Championship and earned the number one seed in the conference tournament. After defeating eighth-seeded Ferrum last Saturday, Meredith earned the privilege to host the semifinal and championship rounds this weekend.

The Angels will face off with fourth-seeded Methodist at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, to open the event. The second semifinal pairing features second-seeded Piedmont College and the third-seeded Maryville Scots at 2:30 p.m. Winners advance to Saturday’s 2 p.m. Championship match.

Please note: Admission will be charged for all tournament matches ($3 faculty, staff, students, seniors, children; $6 general adult admission).

The Meredith volleyball team capped off a solid regular season last Saturday with a 3-0 sweep over league-leader Covenant College and claimed a second-place finish in the USA South Conference North division. The team travels to Covenant this weekend as one of eight teams competing for a tournament championship.

Meredith enters the tournament winning seven of their last nine contests. Seniors Emily Hendricks and Jasmine Aguinaldo are playing at the top of their game to lead the Avenging Angels toward the title.
