Spring 2018 Update on the Avenging Angels

With a thrilling 66-64 home court victory over rival William Peace, the Meredith College basketball team clinched a top-six East Division ranking to advance to the USA South Conference Tournament. Apex-local Kimberly Schuh has earned two Rookie of the Week selections thus far and stands out as one of the top freshman in the league. She matched her career-high 35 points in the win over the Pacers, adding a career-best 15 rebounds. Senior Chandler Hines ranks second in the conference with three-point field goals made this season.

The indoor track competition season resumed this month at Christopher Newport’s Vince Brown Invitational. Rachel Hill and Alex Hafliger set new personal records in the 800 meter run and shot put, respectively, and Demonica Stanley improved on her season-best long jump distance to 4.84m. The Avenging Angels compete once more indoors before opening the spring outdoor season in Georgia March 3.

The tennis Angels opened the spring season versus a tough Division I Elon program and will face off with three Division II teams this month before fellow Division III Virginia Wesleyan travels to Raleigh February 23.

Head Softball Coach Kim Scavone returns nine starting seniors this spring, and the Avenging Angels were selected in the USA South Preseason Coaches’ Poll to win the East Division again this year. Meredith opens the season versus the reigning NCAA Division III National Champion Virginia Wesleyan Marlins and will meet up with two other teams in the top-25 NFCA poll later this spring.

Lacrosse standout Carlee Joseph returns for her fourth and final collegiate season this spring and will lead Meredith in search of the program’s fifth consecutive USA South Tournament Championship. Also selected in the preseason poll to win their league title, the Avenging Angels face off with nationally ranked University of Mary Washington, Catholic University of America, and Colorado College this year.
