School of Business Reports on Fall 2016 Student Activities
- Published
Student organizations in Meredith’s School of Business had an active fall semester, with meetings that provided opportunities for networking and career development.
Broyhill Business Fellows hosted the annual Business School Showcase event on October 28 in the newly renovated Johnson Hall rotunda. Students were able to network with alumnae, Business Advisory Board members, and prominent local professionals. The Business School’s leadership and entrepreneurship programs, student organizations, and recent AACSB re-accredidation were all highlighted at the event. The Broyhill officers are McKinley Thompson, president, Valerie Lawrence, secretary, and Baileigh Jones, treasurer.
The Meredith Accounting and Finance Association (MAFA) held several meetings in the fall semester. In September, a student panel discussed their summer activities. Baileigh Jones and Valerie Lawrence studied abroad in China. Teresa Wilkinson and Nicole Ortega participated in the Student Leadership Institute of North Carolina (SLINC), hosted by the North Carolina Association of CPAs. The students also talked about their internships. Jones is an intern at UNC-CH in the IT department. Wilkinson has been interning at CAPTRUST financial services firm. Ortega is an accounting intern at MedThink. Lawrence interned at Credit Suisse and will have a full-time position there after she graduates. Emily Edwards has been interning at the Office of the State Controller.
In October, MAFA hosted Meredith Assistant Director of Career Development Katie Peterssen. She gave our students great advice about graduate school – how to select a school, how to manage the applications process, and how to go about asking faculty members and professional contacts for references. Finally, in November, MAFA heard from Holly Bazemore from the NCACPA office. She talked about the benefits of a student membership in the organization – the best part is that it’s free! MAFA will be hosting more meetings in the Spring semester. Meetings are the third Monday of the month (beginning in February) at 10 a.m. in Harris 110. MAFA officers are Co-Presidents Emily Edwards and Baileigh Jones, Vice President Vivi Sarp, Co-secretaries Karlie Long and Azada Ahmadi, and Treasurer Betty Woldemeskel. MAFA advisors are Dr. Mary Jane Lenard and Dr. Bing Yu.
