Sarah Susanka Brings Not So Big Sustainability Message to Meredith College

Architect Sarah Susanka, author of The Not So Big House, brought her sustainability message to Meredith College on February 27.

Susanka is the acclaimed author of nine best-selling books including The Not So Big House, The Not So Big Life, Not So Big Remodeling, and most recently, More Not So Big Solutions for Your Home. Her books have sold over 1.2 million copies. Her "Not So Big" message has become a launch pad for a new dimension of understanding - not just about how we inhabit our homes, but also about how we inhabit our planet and even our day-to-day lives.

“Not So Big is not about size, it’s about making the house fit you,” Susanka said. “We need to look at how to right-size, how to scale our lives and our houses to fit the way we actually live.”

Susanka talked about her design philosophy, and shared examples of the design principles used in her work. She also discussed her life as an architect and author, advising the audience to find their passion and focus on that.

“Life is the experiencing of the experience,” Susanka said. “We can’t notice what you are experiencing until we learn to slow down.”

Susanka’s lecture was sponsored by the Meredith College Interior Design program, with the support of Kenan Funds.
