Preparing for a Career Change?

Are you considering a career change or going through a career transition? Are you facing an unplanned opportunity?  Actively looking for new opportunities?  Interested in growing your network and strengthening your skills? Perhaps you are still trying to figure it out.

If you are reading this and thinking, “yes, that’s me,” then the Office of Career Planning invites you to do something about it. It starts with some reflection and self-assessment:

  • Who am I?  What interests me most?  Ask a trusted person what you do best. Do you agree?
  • What do I do best? What are my strengths and skills?  Reflect on your strengths and how you will use them in this process.
  • What do I want most? Reflect on what you want in work. What are your core, non-negotiable values?  Knowing you won’t get everything, what are your top one-two values?

Once you have a better handle on who you are at this particular point in your life, you will then want to explore opportunities to learn more about the options available to you. Check out careers and current job titles through research on LinkedIn. Test out options through volunteer and community experience. Conduct informational interviews with professionals in fields that interest you. Build your network and hear about available positions by participating in career fairs and networking events or meet ups. This semester you are invited to these fairs hosted on Meredith’s campus:

Understanding who you are and what you want most takes action and commitment. Make those steps manageable and realistic.  Develop a plan and set goals. What can you do in ten minutes, one hour, and in one day? Break down tasks so they are more reasonable for you.
