Office of Career Planning Holds Successful Internship Discovery Expo

The Office of Career Planning hosted its annual Internship Discovery Expo on September 21, 2018.

The event saw 189 students gather on the second floor of the Cate Center in search of job opportunities offered by the 26 visiting companies. Representatives, including many Meredith alumnae, provided students insight into an array of industries, ranging from finance to the arts.

According to Assistant Director of Employer Relations Jane Matthews, the Office of Career Planning has noticed an increase in both student and employer participation.

“We were really pleased with the variety of employers that attended this year’s Internship Discovery Expo,” Matthews said. “In addition to employers we have established relationships with, we also had a number of employers participate who were first-time attendees at this particular event, including Cree, Blue Cross Blue Shield NC, Advance Auto Parts, and Automated Insights.”

Students at the Expo have also taken notice of the increase in visiting employers.

“It feels like the companies are coming to us”, said Kanza Ibrahim,’19.

A number of students reported companies asking for their resumes on the spot. Elise Landres, an Environmental Sustainability major, was one such person.

“There are a lot of opportunities…I didn’t realize that I could work at a lot of these companies,” Landres said. “I didn’t know there was an opportunity at MetLife. However, they just asked me for my resume.”

The admiration was not one-sided. After the Internship Discovery Expo, Matthews reported employer feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

“Many mentioned how impressed they were with the caliber of our students,” Matthews said.
