The Meredith College Department of Theatre faculty and 12 theatre majors recently traveled to Statesboro, Ga., for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
The festival is one part competition for student actors, designers, and playwrights and one part showcase. Meredith participated in both parts of the festival.
Nine students were nominated to compete as actors in the Irene Ryan talent scholarship competition. One student was nominated to compete in the stage management competition. Students and faculty competed, attended workshops, performed in one acts and ten minute plays and generally exhausted themselves over the five day conference. The theatre faculty earned three awards of excellence in direction and five awards of excellence in design.
The department was honored to travel with our 2016 production of Suddenly Last Summer as one of six invited productions for the entire southeast. The winner from this competition will be invited to perform at the national convention in Washington D.C. in April. The invitation to perform our production of Suddenly Last Summer at the regional convention speaks volumes about the quality of our theatre program here at Meredith.
