Meredith Ensemble Theatre Earns Kennedy Center Accolades

Nine Meredith theatre majors and the four theatre faculty attended the Kennedy Center American College Region IV Theatre Festival, February 2-6, 2016, hosted by the College of Charleston in South Carolina.  

In addition to the individual nominations, a scene from Little Women the Musical was invited to be performed in festival’s new Musical Theatre Initiative. 

“We are honored to be recognized by KCACTF.  This acknowledgment speaks to the strength of our training program and the talent of our students, as well as demonstrating that Meredith Ensemble Theatre is truly Meredith Strong,” said Associate Professor of Theatre Steven Roten, Meredith Ensemble Theatre’s program director.

All nominated students were selected during the past calendar year for their performances in Little Women the MusicalA Midsummer Night’s Dream, and A Laura Ingalls Wilder Christmas.  Sydney Ferrell, ’17, Maigan Kennedy, ‘16, Sarah Koop, ’17, Victoria Mitchell, ’18, Elena Mulligan, ’17, and Karyn Raynor, ’16 were nominated for the Irene Ryan Scholarship in acting, while Leslie Castro, ’19, and Victoria Mitchell ere nominated for the Design, Technical and Management Award in sound design and stage management.

Everyone participated in workshops, classes and viewed various theatre productions. Senior Maigan Kennedy and William Peace University scene partner Tyler Graeper were semi-finalists in the Irene Ryan Scholarship competition. They were one pair of 48 semi-finalists selected from the 250 original nominees. Meredith was also one of only six schools of higher education selected from the region to participate in the Friday night Musical Theatre Gala.  Maigan Kennedy (Jo) and Karyn Raynor (Marmee) performed a scene and two songs from last year's production of Little Women, directed by Professor Cathy Rodgers.  

Meredith theatre faculty members also earned nominations. Roten was nominated as a faculty director of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Professor of Theatre Catherine Rodgers as a faculty director in Little Women and A Laura Ingalls Wilder Christmas, and Assistant Professor of Theatre Jenni Mann Becker as a faculty designer (scenery) for A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
