Meredith College Celebrates Mexican Consulate Scholars

Meredith College held a celebration for its Mexican Consulate Scholars on April 29, 2016. The College welcomed the Honorable Javier Diaz de Leon, Consul General of Mexico in Raleigh, and other community leaders to the celebration luncheon. The event included remarks from the Consul General and Meredith Provost Matthew Poslusny. It also featured presentations by Meredith students.

Through a new partnership of the IME Becas Local Committee (Institute for Mexicans Abroad) and Juntos Podemos – Together We Can, Meredith College was selected to receive scholarship funding to provide financial assistance to students of Mexican origin.  This is the third year Meredith’s grant proposal has been selected for funding through IME Becas.   This year 17 students were awarded grant funding.

“One area that Meredith’s strategic plan speaks to is the diversity of the student body,” said Poslusny. “To this end we have partnered with various organizations to assist us in providing support in the form of scholarships for our students.”

On behalf of the College, Poslusny thanked those in attendance for their support of Meredith’s Latina students.

“We are thankful to organizations such as The Tomorrow Fund, Juntos Podemos – Together We Can, and Golden Door Scholars.  We are most thankful that we have also been fortunate enough to be able to partner with Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Institute for Mexicans Abroad and the Mexican Consulate in Raleigh to receive funding for scholarships for students through the IME-Scholarship fund,” Poslusny said.

Consul General Javier Diaz de Leon praised Meredith College for its investment in students from Mexico and its match of funds from the consulate. “I couldn’t be prouder or happier on this occasion,” Diaz de Leon said.
