Meredith athletics enjoyed a successful fall season, capped off with the 2013 USA South Women’s Cross Country Conference Championship. Sophomore Allie Gallagher earned Runner of the Year and teammate Ann Chapin Meekins garnered Rookie Runner of the Year honors. To complete the sweep of individual awards, Head Coach Amy Olsen earned the league’s Coach of the Year selection. Seven of 12 runners earned All-Conference recognition for their performance at the championship meet in November.
After posting a league record of 8-3-1, good for a share of fourth place in regular season standings, the Meredith soccer team advanced to the title match held in Martinsville, Virginia. The Avenging Angels lost a hard-fought game to Piedmont 2-1. The All-Tournament team included senior Angels Jessie Davis, Kelsey Hopper and Ila Torfin, along with rookie Samantha Siomkos.
With the addition of three new members this year, the USA South moved to divisions in volleyball. Meredith finished the regular season with 21 wins, the most overall since 1999. A 15-4 conference record placed Meredith as the North division’s second seed in the conference tournament. With seven Volleyball Rookie of the Week selections during the season, freshman standout Karlie Long was the prime candidate and coaches’ pick for Rookie of the Year. Long was joined by senior middle Molly Markley as All-Conference honorees.
The Avenging Angels basketball team returned from winter recess to begin the USA South portion of the schedule. Led by juniors McKenzi Edwards and Keyanka Bailey, Meredith claimed three victories early in league play and hope to remain in the top tier of the North division standings. The top five North division and top three South division teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the conference tournament.
Meredith’s lacrosse, softball and tennis teams launched the spring season in January and start competing later this month. Softball hosts the Triangle Classic February 22-23 and lacrosse welcomes Virginia Wesleyan to campus February 25. After a challenging start with a pair of Division II opponents, the tennis team jumps right into conference play beginning March 1.
