Meredith Athletics – Going Strong in the USA South

Meredith College cross country, soccer and volleyball set the tone for all of athletics during the 2014 season and continue to reach new levels of success. Saturday at Hagan Stone Park in Pleasant Garden, North Carolina, the Avenging Angels cross country squad captured their second consecutive USA South Championship title.

Allie Gallagher, Itzel Gonzalez and Caitlin Dorantich crossed the finish line in third, fourth and fifth place to edge Meredith past the Covenant Scots by just three points in the 6000 meter race. Each Angel earned All-Conference first team honors as a top-seven finisher.

USA South Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Year Mary Kate Morgan earned second team honors, while Heather West, Illa Jones and Brittaney Rice finished in the top-20 to garner All-Conference honorable mention recognition.

In her tenth year as Head Coach of Meredith Cross Country, Amy Olsen collected her second consecutive Coach of the Year award this fall. Senior Callie Davis earned Meredith’s All-Sportsmanship selection.

Both Avenging Angels soccer and volleyball claimed regular season championships last week and enter their respective USA South Conference Tournaments as a number one seed. Meredith soccer shared their title with Piedmont College after posting the same league record of 10-1-1, but the Angels earned the top seed and a home quarterfinal match in the conference tournament.

Meredith downed the eighth-seeded Averett Cougars Saturday in first round tournament action and will face fourth-seeded Maryville in the first of two semifinal matches Friday in Martinsville, Virginia. The final rounds of the USA South Women’s Soccer Tournament will be held at the Smith River Sports Complex.

In her most successful season to date, Head Volleyball Coach Fiona Barkley led the Avenging Angels to 24 regular season wins and a 16-3 conference record. The finish earned Meredith a North division regular season title and a number one seed heading into tournament play this weekend.

MCVB will face the North’s fourth-seeded William Peace Pacers in the third quarterfinal pairing Friday in Martinsville. The USA South Volleyball Tournament will be held in Stone Hall on the campus of Patrick Henry Community College.
