Assistant Professor of Political Science Whitney Ross Manzo was elected vice president of the North Carolina Political Science Association at its recent conference in Research Triangle Park. She will serve as vice president during the 2016-17 academic year. In 2017-18 she will serve as president elect and she will assume the presidency of the association in 2018-19.
At the association's annual meeting, Manzo and Visiting Professor of Political Science David McLennan presented a paper called “Does Their Difference Make a Difference? The Impact of Women on Counties in North Carolina,” which examines how female county commissioners impact the policy choices of county commissions. Specifically, McLennan and Manzo discovered that counties that had a majority female commission spent significantly more on education than counties with fewer (or no) female commissioners.
