Learning Center Gets New Home in Library

The Learning Center will open its doors at a new location beginning August 26, 2015.  Students, faculty, and staff can visit the Learning Center on the ground floor of the library.

The relocation of The Learning Center comes as a result of the Comprehensive Program Assessment conducted during the 2013-2014 academic year.  Campus-wide surveys revealed that 61% of students surveyed and 55% of faculty & staff surveyed preferred the library as their first choice in location.  Similarly, students who use The Learning Center expressed a desire to see The Learning Center in a more centralized location on campus with an updated layout and décor.

“The new location really makes more sense,” says Learning Center Director, Carmen Christopher.  “The library is in the heart of academic life at Meredith, and The Learning Center is a part of that academic life.”

The Learning Center began operations in 1995, when it was The Writing Center.  In the intervening years, The Writing Center adopted its new name as it welcomed tutors in math and foreign languages.  At present, The Learning Center offers tutoring in accounting, economics, English, foreign languages, mathematics, psychology, science, writing, and various other subjects each semester.  Students can make appointments by visiting The Learning Center’s MyMeredith page.

The relocation project is funded by generous donations from Meredith College supporters.  In particular, the Dr. Michael F. and Sophia M. Yarborough Endowment is responsible for The Learning Center’s new home being fully ADA compliant.
