How Students Can Connect with Career Planning this Fall

The Office of Career Planning at Meredith College is busy preparing for the academic year, and we look forward to welcoming your students! We are gearing up for the fall employer recruiting season and an exciting slate of professional development programming, all of which will take place in a virtual format this semester.

OCP is committed to creating equitable recruiting processes on behalf of our students and alumnae, which includes ensuring that job, internship, and interview opportunities are vetted, shared widely, and made accessible to all students and alumnae via Handshake, our virtual recruiting platform. We ask that our employer partners abide by the Principles for Ethical Professional Practice as established by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), and we encourage campus recruiting strategies that eliminate barriers and promote an equitable and inclusive process.

As students get started this fall, we invite them to stay connected with our office via Handshake, which provides access to job and internship postings, connections with employers, upcoming events, and our team’s appointment calendars. We encourage students to get started with us early; our counselors are available to meet with students virtually via Zoom to help them navigate and explore options, gain experience, and make connections. Students who engage in career exploration and decision-making early have more time to participate in multiple professional experiences, enhancing their overall career management abilities and affording them the ability to experiment and reset when needed; ultimately, this means more confident, informed career decisions.

How would you know if a conversation with an OCP counselor would be helpful to your students? Have you heard them voice any of these questions?

  • What would be a good career for me based on my strengths?
  • What major or minor(s) should I choose?
  • I need a job or an internship!
  • Who do I talk to and how do I build connections that will help me get a job or internship?
  • How does my resume/CV/cover letter look?
  • I have an interview coming up. How do I prepare, and what should I do?
  • What do I include on my LinkedIn profile?
  • I have a paid internship and need course credit!
  • Grad school… help!

If you’ve heard your student express any of these ideas or questions, encourage them to seek out OCP support. Here are a few resources they can immediately access and opportunities for them to connect:

OCP MyMeredith: MyMeredith includes tools and resources for major and career exploration, employer/labor market research, networking, resume and interview preparation, and salary negotiation.  Link directly to OCP’s Career Planning Workbook, online learning modules, Handshake, and social media platforms.

OCP Social Media: Follow, like, join, and contribute to any and all of OCP’s social media channels: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube.  Gain an insider view of previous and upcoming employer programming, career sessions and webinars, and virtual career fairs.

Angels Suited for Success: Participate in OCP’s personalized professional development certificate program, offered each semester. The program is flexible and customizable based on students’ individual interests and professional development focus. This outcome-focused program allows students to develop practical skills, connect with professionals, and build confidence talking about their strengths.

Fall Career Fest: On Friday, September 25, students will have the opportunity to connect with a wide variety of employers virtually to explore opportunities.

We hope your students will connect with OCP early and often! Encourage them to download the Handshake app to stay on top of upcoming career-related events and view job and internship postings, and to reach out to us with questions. We look forward to working with them in the coming year!
