How Meredith Athletics Adjusted During the Pandemic

Each of Meredith’s 10 sports teams enjoyed a 10-week modified practice format this fall with three contacts per week with coaches. Thanks to much effort from athletic trainers, coaches, health center staff, athletics administration, and college leadership, the Avenging Angels have remained active, connected, and fit through the pandemic-restricted fall semester.

During week 10 of the fall schedule, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, and volleyball student-athletes will have the opportunity to practice without masks and other restrictions pending results of COVID  that was held on Friday, Nov. 6. Approved by the College’s leadership team, this testing plan will be a trial run for spring semester sports seasons.

While all fall semester competition was cancelled earlier in the semester, the USA South Athletic Conference and Meredith are preparing for modified sports seasons this spring. If the College moves forward with spring seasons, testing will likely be required in order for teams to compete. This fall testing plan will serve as a foundation for next semester.

In spite of the pandemic, the athletic department moved forward with several facility projects already in motion. New lockers were delivered and installed at the Athletic Field and Track Complex to prepare the space for five sports teams with the most recent addition of field hockey. While teams are unable to use the indoor space during the pandemic, efforts continue to spruce up the building and locker room so they will be ready when reopening is allowed. To make room for the lockers, a new storage building was delivered and filled with sports equipment for all five teams. Additionally, a new storage building delivered to the softball venue will eventually serve as a team room for Meredith players.
