Graves Earns Teacher of the Year Honor

Betsy Graves, a 2012 graduate of Meredith College, was named the 2016-17 Broughton High School Teacher of the Year. Graves, who has been at Broughton for four years, serves as dance educator and is the director of the Broughton High School Dance Team.

“I am overwhelmed with being named Broughton High School’s Teacher of the Year,” said Graves. “To be selected by my colleagues is an honor I cannot explain. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was five years old when I showed up dressed as one for kindergarten career day, so this is truly the ultimate honor to me.”

Graves earned a bachelor’s degree in dance with a K-12 dance education licensure and was a history minor. While at Meredith, Graves was a member of the Meredith Dance Theatre and the Meredith Jazz and Tap Company. She became the first Meredith student in history to be selected to the American College Dance Festival Gala for choreography.

“Dance in a public school allows for students to learn discipline, accountability, and leadership,” said Graves. “Watching my students, from all backgrounds, work together to do and be something bigger than themselves is a true joy. I believe my life purpose is to work with students to develop their passion, find their voice, and encourage them to be strong, educated, and caring citizens. I am honored to have this profession.”

When she was a student at Meredith, she earned numerous accolades for her academic performance. In 2012, she earned the Bonnie Torgerson Award for Excellence in Teaching and an Academic Excellence in Dance Award. Graves was also recognized as one of Meredith College’s Top Ten Outstanding Seniors, and was a Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities recipient. Graves was also inducted into Nu Delta Alpha and Alpha Lambda Delta, where she served as president, and the Silver Shield Society.

“I truly love every day that I am able to work with students and watch them grow in their strength, confidence, passion, desire for learning and inclusiveness,” said Graves. “It is an honor to be able to practice my passion every day.”
