Meredith Student Earns Award from WomenNC

Meredith College senior Cristy Villalobos is the recipient of the 2017 Carolyn King CSW award, presented by WomenNC.

Villalobos was one of three North Carolina college students selected to present at the United Nations’ 61st Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), which was held in March 2017 in New York City. The theme of this year’s UN event was women’s economic empowerment in the world of work.  Villalobos’ presentation topic was on the reproductive rights of women and girls who are incarcerated.

The Carolyn King Award was presented to Villalobos during a recent event in which each of the WomenNC Student Fellows discussed their U.N. experiences.

The Carolyn S. King Award honors the legacy and example of Carolyn King, a lifelong advocate and pioneer for women’s rights and for racial and social justice. The award recognizes a demonstrated passion for racial justice, courage in advocating opportunities for marginalized persons, and sensitivity, positive attitude and perseverance in the face of challenge.

Villalobos is earning a major in political science. Read her Strong Story
