Departments Share Recent Service Projects

Many Meredith College departments and programs do service projects to mark the holiday season or as part of a community service effort. The Division of Institutional Advancement, the Admissions Department, and the School of Business shared news about their recent projects.

Division of Institutional Advancement Adopts a Family
The Division of Institutional Advancement adopted a family through Wake County Social Services in December. The goal was to support a family during the holiday with gifts they could all open on Christmas morning and to show them the Meredith community cares about their well-being.

For the past six years supporting a family during the month of December has become a tradition in Institutional Advancement. This year the division helped a mother and her three children. Wish lists were received, Institutional Advancement employees bought and wrapped gifts, and everything was delivered to the mother on December 13 to much enjoyment from the IA staff.

“To be able to give back to our community is important to us all,” said Lennie Barton, vice president of Institutional Advancement. “It always brings us so much joy to buy these gifts, but when we deliver them to the family their expressions show us what it means to them.”

Admissions Department holds annual Team Building Service Project Admissions Department volunteering at a food bank
After logging hundreds of miles during travel season and in the midst of reading and processing applications, the Admissions Department gathered for their annual team building service project at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina on January 4. Serving over 30 counties in N.C., the Food Bank works with an extensive network of agencies that provide food for people who are at-risk of hunger.

The team volunteered for a two-hour shift at the Food Bank in Raleigh, sorting frozen meat and poultry.  At the end of the shift, the volunteer coordinator revealed the team had sorted, packaged, and organized the equivalent of 4,167 meals for those in need.

This service project was part of a half-day of team building activities and professional development organized by the team building committee in their effort to help department members connect with each other and have fun during a busy season of admissions work.
