Basketball Wraps Up Home Dates; Track & Field Joins Busy Spring Season

The momentum of the Meredith College athletics department accelerates in February with the anticipation of the spring sports schedules combined with the basketball Avenging Angels in the thick of the challenging conference campaign.

The basketball squad picked up a much needed victory Sunday afternoon at home versus N.C. Wesleyan. Five Angels finished in double figures with Jessi Hayes leading the pack. With just five USA South games remaining, Meredith continues to battle for one of eight coveted spots in the league tournament scheduled for later in the month.

The Avenging Angels host Methodist Saturday at 2 p.m. with the final home basketball game Thursday, Feb. 11 versus Roanoke. Head Coach Melinda Campbell and her team will celebrate seniors Kim Hinton and Raven Gregory, as well as December graduate Laquetta Hairston, just prior to the 7 p.m. tipoff next week.

Meredith lacrosse, softball, tennis, and the new track & field team opened the spring season last month and struggled through wet, cold, icy weather conditions during the first weeks of practice. Perhaps groundhog Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction of an early spring will hold true, and the Avenging Angels will enjoy a warmer season moving forward.

Mark your calendars as softball opens at home versus Shaw University Saturday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m. Lacrosse hosts the Marymount Saints the following weekend, and the tennis Avenging Angels will finally be home February 27 as the College wraps up the 125th anniversary week.

The track & field team will remain on the road throughout the season with the first meet slated for March 5 in Rome, Ga. Athletic Director Jackie Myers and Head Coach Leslie Payne will introduce the 23-member squad during a campus-wide celebration March 31. Stay tuned for more details on this afternoon event at the track.
