Avenging Angels Update: March 15, 2016

Registration recently opened for the 18th Annual Meredith College Golf Classic slated for Monday, April 11, at Brier Creek Country Club. We offer several ways for Meredith faculty and staff to be involved. We are now collecting prizes and gifts for the golfer goodie bags and silent auction. Individuals and businesses may also sponsor the golf tournament in a variety of ways. If you or someone you know may be interested in supporting the efforts, please visit goavengingangels.com for more details.

The new Avenging Angel track & field squad opened the season strong at Berry College in Rome, Ga., with eight top-10 event finishes and sixth-place overall among the 12 teams, and will head to Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday for the PowerSox Invite. Mark your calendars for a campus-wide celebration March 31 at 3 p.m. down at the track. Join Athletic Director Jackie Myers as she introduces Head Coach Leslie Payne and the first-ever track & field team. Board of Trustees member Ann Lowery, ’74, will be in attendance to receive our gratitude for her gift of Meredith’s eighth varsity sport.

Meredith lacrosse returned from a 2-0 trip to Puerto Rico to open the USA South season 2-0 for a clean sweep of the conference weekly honors. Carlee Joseph, Alyssa Codispoti, and Julie Capretti were recognized. The Avenging Angels capped off the week with a 15-12 win over the visiting Piedmont Lions, the first in program history versus Piedmont during a regular season match.

In a six-game series in Clermont, Florida, the softball Angels closed out four games in a win and battled strong versus Susquehanna and nationally ranked Moravian. N.C. Wesleyan handed Meredith their first of two conference losses Saturday with a seventh-inning grand slam, but Kim Scavone will have her team ready for this weekend’s road trip to Huntingdon and LaGrange. The Angels are batting well and will pose a threat to the remaining teams on the schedule.

The tennis team returned early from spring break to knock out a couple of practices to prepare for bulk of the conference season still left to play. Ran Zhang collected her first USA South Player of the Week honor before the break and remains undefeated this spring.

Meredith athletics Summer Soccer Camp registration is open and others will be available soon. Register early to secure your child’s spot!
