Athletics Update: Spring Sports Concluding Soon

Believe it or not, the USA South softball, lacrosse, and women’s tennis regular seasons will conclude in less than two weeks, and the Avenging Angels are poised to finish strong. Conference tournament action begins April 8 with softball division playoffs, and the track & field Angels will compete in a regional championship meet in Durham April 20.

The softball team has won seven of their last eight games and shares the lead in the USA South’s East Division standings with Ferrum College. The teams pair off Saturday, April 1, here at Meredith. Averett trails both programs in third place, and all three teams must play each other this week.

Lacrosse cruised past conference rival Piedmont in Georgia last weekend to rise to the top of USA South standings with four conference matches remaining. MC lax hosts LaGrange, Huntingdon, and Ferrum in the coming week.

Track & Field’s team continues to show improvement with rookies Essence Thomas and Amy Rhoney setting new Meredith standards in the 200m sprint and shot put, respectively. Thomas continues to climb the regional ranks and holds a top-25 position in both the 200m and 400m sprints. Kiara Glover ranks in the top-50 in the 800m run.

The tennis Avenging Angels opened the USA South season last week versus a tough N.C. Wesleyan squad and posted their first win with a 9-0 sweep at Mary Baldwin. Rival and East Division leader Methodist travels to Meredith Thursday for a 3 p.m. contest, and the team wraps up their home schedule Saturday.
