Athletics Update: Spring 2017 Sports in Full Swing
- Published
In spite of recent cold temperatures, Meredith’s spring sports are in full swing. Lacrosse just closed out a 3-0 week with the season’s first USA South win of the year over Methodist. The Angels downed the visiting Scranton Royals 13-11 in a close battle Friday evening and capped off the weekend with a 21-5 rout over Southwestern (Texas).
Rookie Essence Thomas set a new all-time Meredith track & field record in the 400m sprint at the University of Mount Olive’s Trojan Challenge Friday afternoon. Her pace of 1:00.02 bested her earlier times by more than five seconds to advance up the leader board. In the 800m run Kiara Glover improved her season-best by more than five seconds, and Amy Rhoney extended her career-best shot put distance by 0.72m.
The softball Avenging Angels finished off a 4-2 week with a pair of wins over the USA South’s Maryville Scots, both credited to rookie pitcher Myah Morse. Meredith swept Methodist in Fayetteville earlier in the week before dropping a pair of heartbreakers at Salem. Originally scheduled for last week, the doubleheader versus cross-town rival William Peace will be played Thursday at 2:30 p.m. here at Meredith.
Tennis returns to action this week after a restful break in the schedule. The Angels are slated to travel to Virginia Saturday for a doubleheader with Mary Baldwin and Randolph-Macon and return to their home court Thursday, March 30, for a 3 p.m. match with rival Methodist.
