The Meredith College 2015 fall sports season began with a full slate of events on campus September 1. Cross country defeated William Peace in a 3,000 meter race with freshman Macy Brinson leading the pack. Brinson was named the USA South Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week for her efforts.
The soccer Avenging Angels opened with 2-1 loss to Roanoke College, and volleyball capped off the day with a 3-1 win over the St. Andrews Knights.
With a pair of wins in the Meredith Soccer Classic, the Angels finished opening week with a 2-1 record. Senior defender Megan Luke led the charge scoring three of Meredith’s six goals overall and earned a spot on the Classic’s All-Tournament team. Ellice Johnson, Cassie Padilla, and Jessica Wallace joined Luke in the selection.
Volleyball faced a series of tough competitors in the Captain’s Classic over the weekend, beginning with nationally ranked Christopher Newport. After a loss to CNU, Meredith fell to Ohio’s Hiram College to close out day one of the tournament. Saturday, the Avenging Angels lost to Mary Washington before finishing the play day with a 3-0 victory over Bridgewater. Karlie Long recorded 50 kills on the week, and Emery McGee notched 58 digs for the Angels.
Mark your calendars as Meredith cross country will compete at the nearby WakeMed Park Friday, Sept. 18. The women are slated to start at 6 p.m. Take advantage of this location to cheer on the Angels.
