Athletics Update: Fall 2013 Sports Season in Full Swing

The Meredith College fall sports teams jumped off to a great start this season. Cross country won their first race of the season at St. Andrews University and continues to set the pace for area Division III competition.

Freshman runner Ann Chapin Meekins of Shelby, N.C., earned USA South Rookie of the Week honors during the second and third weeks of the season. Veteran harrier Allie Gallagher leads the Avenging Angels this fall and claimed a top-ten finish on two occasions already.

The soccer team opened the season playing nationally ranked Virginia Wesleyan and former USA South member Christopher Newport. Meredith held the Marlins to a 0-0 draw in double overtime at their own invitational in August, and the Captains scored late in the Angels’ second match to claim a win.

In the Meredith College Soccer Classic September 6 and 7, the Avenging Angels earned two more double overtime ties versus the tough competition of New York’s New Paltz State and Salem College. Jessie Davis, Eliza Evans, Meghan Ingram and Megan Luke were named to the All-Tournament team.

After back-to-back wins over the WildCats of Randolph College and conference opponent Mary Baldwin, Meredith holds a record of 2-1-3 as the team prepares for the tough USA South season.

Head Volleyball Coach Fiona Barkley scheduled her team for a pair of challenging tournaments to open the 2013 season and was pleased with the results. Meredith picked up three wins at the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational Labor Day weekend versus Rowan, Mary Washington and Randolph.

The following weekend the team faced nationally ranked Otterbein and Christopher Newport in Lexington, Va., and forced the OU Cardinals to a fourth set.

With two non-conference wins over St. Andrews and Salem, the Avenging Angels sit at an even 5-5 before heading into the tough USA South season.
