Meredith Mathematics & Science Institutes (MMSI) offers quality professional development opportunities for Kindergarten through High School classroom teachers and coaches that focus on important mathematics content as identified in North Carolina’s Standards for Mathematics.
This year, MMSI has structured its annual program to highlight resources developed by master teachers and to demonstrate strategies employed by these teacher leaders in their own classrooms. If you have previously attended MMSI or if this year will be your first time, the following information highlights the program for summer 2018.
For Kindergarten through fifth grade teachers there are two-day programs of grade-level specific courses, July 23 and 24. Teacher leaders who have been involved in the Tools for Teachers, Partners, and TAP Math Projects will lead this professional development that incorporates information about a mathematics instructional framework as well as modeling how to access resources for each mathematics standard. For more information regarding individual workshops, please view the 2018 course descriptions. Course descriptions and Registration for 2018 will be posted in late February.
For K-5 and 6-8 coaches there are two special two-day courses, July 23 and 24. Led by teachers and curriculum specialists with extensive experience supporting these grade levels, the courses will focus on ways to best coordinate development of important mathematics across grades. Course content will include information about accessing resources by Standards as well as new instructional framework, highlights about critical content for each grade, and strategies for fulfilling your role as a mathematics coach. For more information regarding individual workshops, please view the 2018 course descriptions. Course descriptions and Registration for 2018 will be posted in late February.
The registration fee for each course includes handouts, a professional book and a flashdrive with resources for your grade, and two lunches. Because both research and experience indicates that students are more likely to thrive when there is a coordinated program across the grades, MMSI is providing special discounts for groups of teachers from the same school. Class sizes are limited, so consider organizing a school team to take advantage of the many professional learning opportunities and the special discounts that are explained on the registration form. Registration forms for 2018 will be posted in late February.
For ninth through twelfth grade teachers MMSI is offering a new one-day drive-in conference, July 25. This conference will feature presentations by a number of knowledgeable classroom teachers who have been a part of Mathematics-Science Partnership Projects during the past five years. Participants will choose from more than a dozen sessions throughout the day. The drive-in conference will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a light lunch included. For more information regarding the individual sessions, please view the High School Drive-In Conference description. Information about costs is located with the Conference registration. The Conference description and Registration will be posted in late February.
