MATHEMATICS MAJOR
at Meredith College

At Meredith, you will have the opportunity to gain meaningful experiences that will prepare you for a professional career through internships, research, and a diverse curriculum. You will strengthen your expertise through coursework incorporating calculus, statistics, theoretical mathematics, and applied mathematics.

Meredith provides an empowering and strengths-based environment for women, giving them the confidence to thrive in the STEM field. You will graduate from the math program ready to make a positive impact and pave the way for future generations of women in STEM.

As a part of Meredith’s STEM program, you can pursue a bachelor of science or a bachelor of arts in mathematics, as well as minors in mathematics, mathematics and computer applications, statistics, and web development. You can also gain your mathematics teaching licensure for middle and secondary grades. We offer a dual degree engineering program, which is an agreement between Meredith and North Carolina State University, where you can simultaneously complete the academic requirements of both institutions and gain two degrees in five years.

Our Math Programs

Students earning a bachelor of arts in mathematics are required to complete 40 credit hours  which include 22 credit hours of core math courses, 12 hours of statistics and electives, and six hours of  MAT-354 or MAT-371 and MAT-410 or MAT-420.

Students earning a bachelor of science in mathematics are required to complete 52-54 credit hours which include 22 credit hours of core math courses, 12 hours of statistics electives, nine hours of required courses, three hours of electives, and six to eight hours in a science area of their choice.

  • Students earning a degree in mathematics are eligible to seek North Carolina teacher licensure for mathematics in middle grades (6-9) or secondary education (9-12).
  • To complete the mathematics education program, students must complete the requirements for their chosen major and the following licensure requirements.

Students must be admitted into the Teacher Education Program to enroll.

  • The agreement between Meredith and North Carolina State University allows students to earn two degrees, one from each institution, in five years. 
  • Students receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from Meredith and a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace, biological, biomedical, civil, computer, electrical, industrial, or mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University.
  • In this program, students develop leadership and communication skills through internships and guidance from professional mentors.
  • Students must meet the program eligibility requirements.

  • An example of student success is Teaching Fellow Haley Ervin, ’18, who always loved math and teaching. Haley wanted to teach her students that math is more than just numbers, but also about problem solving and thinking critically. Her time at Meredith left her feeling confident in her ability to give her students the best education possible.

An Honors Scholar with majors in psychology and mathematics, Paige Lawrence, ’21, has learned the importance of community while at Meredith— a realization that inspired her to work with retirement homes to study fall prevention. After graduation, she will continue her studies at East Carolina University in the Master of  Occupational Therapy program.

For as long as she can remember, Aly Henneberry, ’23, has loved three things: math, science, and tennis. While at Meredith, she affirmed her strengths and pursued several networking opportunities that served her well after graduation.

Eran Artigues, ’18, has taken on the challenges of pursuing two STEM degrees while competing on the softball diamond and developing her skills through experiential learning opportunities.

Mathematics News and Events

Meredith College student Emma Brooks, ’24, has been featured on the website of Women in Data Science (WiDS) Worldwide.  Brooks is earning a degree in mathematics and computer science with a minor in data science. In the WiDs article, she discusses how her interest in data science began at Meredith.

Kagure Wamunyu, ’13, returned to Meredith College to share life lessons with students. At the lunch, Wamunyu shared what she has learned throughout her journey from her time at Meredith to her current entrepreneurial pursuits in Kenya.
